Converting mov files to m4v files

Apple iPhones and iPod Touches can only play MPEG-4 encoded video files (m4v). Other formats are not supported so you need to convert movie files to m4v files. Simply follow these steps to convert mov to m4v.

  1. Open up Itunes.
  2. Select Library -> Movies, and File->Add to Library
  3. Select the movies you want to convert (you can do multiple files at a time. Use SHIFT for continuous selection or COMMAND for discontinuous selection when selecting)
  4. Now, select all the imported movies. I use do COMMAND-A to select all. To select one by one, hold down COMMAND and select.
  5. Go to Advanced -> Create iPod or iPhone Version
  6. Wait for the conversion to complete.
  7. Now you have m4v files that are playable on your Apple iPod Touch or iPhone or Google Android phone as well.

Note: When inside Itunes and you want to see where the actual movie file is located? Simply right-click on the movie and select Show in Finder (macs only. Windows version should have something similar).
